The Behs are smiling, happy, yellow little creatures I started doodling a few years back, with the intention of writing children’s storybooks. I dreamt up an entire mythical world and cast of characters, but had no confidence in my drawing or painting skills.
I worked as a children’s bookseller at the time, so inspiration was everywhere, especially in the form of Lauren Child and Polly Borland’s “The Princess and The Pea” - a gorgeous retelling of the classic fairytale. The illustration involved cut-out figures inhabiting a fantasy land filled with doll’s house miniatures, all beautifully photographed. That was the light bulb moment. Maybe I could “make” the illustrations, as opposed to drawing them…
I was always good with plasticene, so I thought maybe I should give polymer clay a go. Instead, the first Behs took a more edible form, as part of a birthday cake, and were crafted from fondant. Couldn’t bear to eat them though, and the lads still live in a box in the bottom drawer! They turned out okay, so armed with a rainbow of polymer clay, I set off in search of tiny furniture and tea sets.
Next came a couple of trial runs - and toasted outcasts where the timing went wrong - before the first Beh was born, taking the form of a Beh version of my Dad for a 60th birthday present. It had cotton wool hair, gardening tools, sweets, cigars, and ended up with one very happy owner.
The following week brought Valenbeh, the guardian of love in Behland. You could say he’s kind of like Cupid, but with more of a wandering eye for the ladies.
The storybooks never happened, but the Behs kept on coming.
Behland, and it’s inhabitants have lived on via the medium of ornaments and dioramas.
